A Beautiful Mind is a touching film in which the true story of an amazing scholar
diagnosed with schizophrenia is detailed in an emotional yet honest way. Schizophrenia is a
disease that we have learned of over the past few semesters yet reading it in a book is far
different than seeing it in a nonfiction movie or in real life. A disease that holds stigmas such as
an inability to live a normal life, a dangerous individual or poor physical health, when in fact,
these are actually myths. Schizophrenic individuals may have a breakdown or split from reality,
but they very much are able to live a normal life, just as John Nash was. Although it has been
seen that only about thirty percent of individuals can recover from the disease, a greater number
than this can be able to manage the symptoms and carry on living their lives. Violence is not a
symptom of schizophrenic individuals but are actually more often victims of violence.
