Amebiasis is an infectious disease in the intestines, resulting from a parasitic invasion
caused by Entamoeba histolytica, or E. histolytica for short. The known history of this
parasite dates all the back to around 1000 BC. In fact, ancient texts reference the
symptoms of this disease in such a way that it can likely be theorized that parasitic
amoebas have plagued humans well before the 6th century BC. For something so small,
Amebiasis has definitely held its own in the timeline of humankind.
Entamoeba histolytica is a single-cell protozoan that can infect the intestines through the
ingestion of E. histolytica “cysts” that attach to the inside of intestinal walls and release a
type of parasite known as a trophozite. This cyst ingestion usually occurs from
contaminated food or drink. E. histolytica cysts can also enter the body through direct
contact with feces. Amebiasis is generally transmitted by food handlers carrying the E.
histolytica cysts, colonic irritation, or anal sex. Although amebiasis is easily and
commonly transmitted from lack of hygienic practices, especially in less-hygienic
countries, only about 10-20% of people who become infected from the parasite, actually
become ill from the symptoms.
The diagnosis of Amebiasis can become lengthy. Although the individual tests for
Amebiasis are generally simple, there are quite a few. The first and most simple of which
includes series of stool samples over several days. Next, a liver test may be necessary to
check for parasitic damage. Additionally, ultrasounds and CT are usually required to check
