Course Description Introduction to Business
This introductory course for both business and non-business majors provides a broad
understanding of the business community, including how culture; society; economic systems;
legal, international, political, and financial institutions; and human behavior interact to affect a
business organization’s policy and practices within the U.S. and a global society. Topics include
business functions and terminology; organizational structure and design; leadership; human
resource management; organized labor practices; marketing; organizational communication;
technology, entrepreneurship; legal, accounting, and financial practices; the stock and securities
market; and occupational choices. This course is intended for students majoring in business or
anyone interested in the function and role of the business community. Associate Degree Credit &
transfer to CSU. UC Transfer Course List.
Student Learning Outcomes Throughout this course assignments are collectively assessed to
determine if this course meets these established Student Learning Outcomes:
1. Students will compare and contrast private verses public enterprise, including forms of
ownership and interrelationships among business, government, and society.
2. Students will demonstrate an understanding of a SWOT analysis by conducting a personal
analysis for practice.
Required Textbook: Visit San Diego City College Bookstore Online or On-Campus
A textbook is required. Reading, homework assignments, and quiz
questions are taken from the textbook and other course materials.
