An article, any article, contains any number of parts which can inform the reader as to its information
currency, its relevance, its authority, purpose and accuracy. By understanding the anatomy of an article
and knowing what to look for, the reader can honestly assess the article for their research. What follows
is an approach and a breakdown of the various parts.
It is also important to note that not all elements are of equal weight. Depending on the information
needs and the context of the information, some elements can have more (or less) significance than
others.
Finally, it needs to be said that this is a simple guide and not a rule sheet. As always, please keep in mind
that research is a creative process, one that is always open to new and different approaches.
Approach:
• Read abstract first: This provides an overview of the article.
• Skim the article: Try to get a ‘feel’ for the article, its sections and contents. This is particularly
important later when taking notes, responding to the authors ideas and collecting quotes.
• Next read introduction and conclusion: This should be a closer read and it will help you
determine if the article fits your information needs.
• Finally read the entire article: Only do this if you have determined the article is relevant. (But
