Essay 1
To attempt to analyze the human experience from birth and the subsequent
development at first glance appears to be a daunting task. To attempt to harrow on what
are the building blocks that Ezra Taft Benson, a member of the executive branch of in the
United States, said “provided us with the necessities of life’ and “nursed us through
physical illnesses and the emotional stresses of growing up.”His analysis gives insight to
what role the caregivers have on the development of a child. This shows the importance
of the environment that the child is raised. A child must be provided with not only
physical safety but the opportunity to grow into the process of self actualization. Four
theorists will be mentioned: Rousseau, Locke, Bowlby, and Montessori. A point will be
made to assert that Locke’s theory of environmentalism is the most pertinent.
A most optimal place to raise to child would be in which they are allowed to both
thrive but be protected. This would start at Infancy. According to Rousseau’s stages of
devolvement model during stage (birth to 2 years) “Infants experience the world
primarily through their senses” (Crain 15). An optimal environment would have various
items that stimulate the senses. The child’s room would be filled with vibrant colors.
Each of the walls would have their own indentations. There would be an integration of
technology to allow some sort of reward system. During this time their grammar is
beginning to develop. During this window their ability to learn language so quickly could
be utilized. It would be optimal if two languages could be learned simultaneously. The
reward system would be more of social cues and smiles on some sort of screen. This
would be the beginning of them making associations. When the do activities that are good
for the development they will be rewarded.
During this period as Bowlby states that during this time span there is a critical
stage of attachment. It would be optimal if done in a two parent/care-giver household.
The demands of raising an infant between the ages of 0-6months would likely be very
demanding for one person .It would be important that child had two stable caregivers in
which they could have solid base of attaching. It will be important also for the parent not
to smother the child. Such a behavior is overindulgent and counterintuitive to the child’s
development.
