In the essay “Black Men and Public Space” by Brent Staples the main character starts off
the essay with him saying that his first victim was a woman. As a reader I thought he had
committed a crime being that he said the word victim. As I kept reading I noticed that I
misunderstood and he is the victim. He’s the victim because he is an African American male
