REALITY OF THE TWO-FACTOR THEORY

Chapter 5 discusses the different types of motivational theories. Motivation is
psychological feature that initiates, guides and maintains goal-oriented behaviors. I will be
focusing on a particular theory called the Herzberg’s two-factor theory. This theory states
that there are two specific sets of factors. The implication of this theory is that motivation
should be designed into work itself. In this analysis I will discuss the motivator and
hygiene factors that motivate individuals.
Motivators are intrinsic conditions that include: achievement, recognition, responsibility,
advancement, the work itself and the possibility of growth. A research was conducted on
individuals to determine how characteristics of personality and need patterns that affects
their choice motivators and hygiene factors as sources of satisfaction and dissatisfaction.
According to Sutaria, R. (1980) “The motivation seekers, on the other hand, were

psychologically mature individuals striving to gratify higher order psychological needs.
Due to proper development of personality and active higher order needs they sought
satisfaction as well as dissatisfaction from motivators" (221). An assistant manager came
to Publix from Walmart and took a position as a stock employee. The stock crew came in
at 3 a.m. and worked until the afternoon, a little after lunch. This guy would always speak
to everyone, willing to go the extra mile for Publix and the customers. He was the first
person who was named employee of the month and outperformed all the other associates
who have been at Publix for years. Luke was promoted to a team lead within a year of
