We compared/contrasted Facebook and Myspace by conducting a SWOT analysis, in order
to understand which companies were excelling in different areas. Facebook is the biggest
and most dominant social media platform today. Advertisers understand this information
and utilize Facebook at an optimum level due to the increased popularity over the years,
which in turn is able to generate extremely high revenues for Facebook. There is great
potential for advertisers using Facebook in the future as well, as Facebook is continuously
improving their advertising strategy and shifting to mobile ad targeting. Facebook has such
a diversified and wide-ranged user market, which has allowed them to separate themselves
from other social media platforms. Although Facebook has success in advertising, users
have found the ads to be overwhelming and annoying. Along with advertising
bombardment, Facebook has been known to struggle with security issues. Many hackers
and fake accounts have made their presence on the social media site, leading users away
from the site due to anxiety and discomfort.
Myspace has re-branded their social media site to a more music and entertainment-based
platform, which poses a great opportunity for artists, musicians and fans. Myspace also
offers highly customizable user profiles, which is another strength that has attracted users
over the past years. However, in recent years, Myspace has dropped significantly in
