Who is Guilty for Global Warming?
Global warming is the gradual world worldwide rise in surface temperature observed
across the entire planet in recent decades and in Ban Ki-moon’s speech, he criticizes rich
countries’ current situation against global warming. He says that the developed world
should bear responsibility for climate change. UN secretary general states rich nations are
responsible for global warming because their factories released carbon emissions into the
atmosphere long before the climate effects were known. He added that the Kyoto protocol
which is only binding agreement covers the emissions of developed countries. Ban
Ki-moon believes climate change is happening much faster than we can understand. I
partially agree with the Ban Ki-moon. I think that he makes a relevant point when he
blames rich countries for global warming. However, there are some other factors such as
human beings or poor countries.
I agree with Ban Ki-moon on that main actors for global warming are rich countries. For
example, although the U.S. has less than 5% of Earth’s population, it produces 25% of
CO2 emissions (Knauer, 2007, p.19). To illustrate, factories in rich countries do not care
about the environment. They use coal, natural gas without limitation and it increase
greenhouse gas emission. Proving this, Knauer states that hydrocarbon fuels were used to
generate energy after Industrial Revolution. They carry with carbon emissions which are
by-product of their combustion. These gases build up in the planet’s atmosphere, where
they act like the panes of glass on a greenhouse, allowing the sun’s warmth in but not back
