Depression
There are different types of depression, but the two main type of depression are major
depression and dysthymia. All other types of depression falls under these two categories. It
is known to be a mental disorder. There are various aspects of personality, and its
development appears to be integral to the occurrence and persistence of depression. In its
mildest state, depression indicates a listless or downhearted mood that might follow a sad
event, such as the death of a friend or a relative, or stem from an unfulfilling pursuit, such
as unrequired love (Gale, 2014, para 1). Similar to mild depression, the symptoms of
clinical depression can include feelings of sadness and lowered self-esteem (Gale, 2014,
papa 2). Because individuals and their experiences are unique, clinical depression can
manifest in different ways.
The National Institute of Mental Health categorizes depressive illnesses by severity,
duration, and circumstance (Gale, 2014, para 4). Treating severe depression and other
depressed disorders often requires a combination of mental health counseling and
prescription drugs. The use of antidepressants is one option in the fight against depression,
but some therapies avoid the use of drugs entirely and focus on persistent, mindful
strategies to change habits and attitudes to move forward on a day to day basis.
Some people use Electroconvulsive Therapy treatment for depression. Most people might
be quicker to associate electroshock therapy with torture rather than healing (Dahl, 2012,
para 2). “It’s the definitive treatment for depression," says Dr. Kenneth Melman,
psychiatrist at the Swedish Medical Center in Seattle who practices ECT (Dahl, 2012, para
